Top 10 new year’s resolution tips for students

With a new year comes fresh starts and new beginnings.

It’s easy to make resolutions—keeping them for the rest of the year is hard. Whether you’ve promised yourself to improve your grades, get healthy or find a job, we provide resources to help you reach your goals.

Improve your grades

Having trouble managing your time? Struggling to establish good study habits? We’ve got your back.

Peerconnect

Peer coaches at each campus can show you how to manage your academic and personal commitments, develop new study habits and reduce stress. Be sure to take advantage of Peerconnect’s drop-in services and workshops. You can find study tips at georgebrown.ca/peerconnect/tips. PEERCONNECT

Tutoring & Learning Centre (TLC)

You can find a TLC location at each campus. These centres focus on helping students develop their English and math skills. TLC offers one-on-one tutoring as well as workshops. TUTORING AND LEARNING CENTRE (TLC)

Find study buddies

Start a study group with people in your program. This allows you to share notes and ideas with classmates and explain concepts to each other. It’s also a great way to prepare for tests and exams.

Want to broaden your circle of friends and get involved in the George Brown community?

Join the Student Leadership Academy

As a member, you’re able to volunteer for events, including Student Life activities, service fairs, orientation, academic workshops and more. This is also your opportunity to get an invite to the Student Leadership Academy retreat that happens every summer.STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Get yourself on solid financial ground

College life can leave you tight for cash, but there are resources to help you cover the cost of your education.

Student awards

George Brown offers hundreds of scholarships, bursaries and awards. It takes about 30-40 minutes to fill out the online application and it could pay off.

Budget tips

Make a budget and stick to it. Check out this article: Expert tips on budgeting and managing student debt.

HigherEd Points

George Brown participates in the HigherEd Points program. Ask friends and family to donate their Aeroplan points to help you pay for your education.

Find a part-time job

Visit your campus Career Centre to find out about positions available on campus. Our career advisors provide help with resumes, interview skills and more. It’s also a good idea to start thinking about a summer job and/or your work placement.

Get active

Incorporating exercise into your schedule can be tough when you’re juggling school and other commitments. Luckily, there are services and facilities at George Brown that can make sneaking in a workout session easier.

Visit the fitness centres at St. James and Casa Loma campuses. These facilities are open all day, Monday to Friday and also offer women and trans-only hours.

Quit smoking

Trying to quit smoking? There are plenty of resources out there to help you butt out for good.

George Brown’s Student Life team can provide help if you want to quit smoking. Email [email protected].

The Leave the Pack Behind campaign is running a would-u-rather contest with $10,000 in prizes up for grabs.

Check out the Smokers Helpline site. Support comes in many forms. You can try the online program, call the hotline at 1-877-513-5333, or sign up to get text messages.

Eat healthier

The Good Food Market makes it easier for students to buy fresh fruits and vegetables for reasonable prices on campus.

St. James Campus, building A (200 King St. E.), Thursdays outside the Campus Store, 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Casa Loma Campus, Thursdays, student lounge, 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Waterfront Campus, Wednesdays, main lobby, 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The Student Association of George Brown College also provides fresh nutritious meals through its Student Nutrition Access Program (SNAP). Find details at studentassociation.ca.

Learn a new skill

All full-time students have free access to Linkedin Learning, which contains thousands of online courses on a wide range of topics. Take advantage of the service to learn something new. LINKEDIN LEARNING

Find balance

Juggling school and work can be stressful. Try and schedule time for study, fitness and entertainment. A little fun and a lot of balance will help you feel energized and less stressed, and you’ll be less likely to procrastinate. Peerconnect offers time management workshops to help. Broaden your horizons

George Brown’s International Centre provides work and study abroad options. This could be a great opportunity to gain international experience. STUDY AND WORK ABROAD
