Diamond Schmitt Architects Inc. issued the following announcement on April 3.

As the skyline climbs higher throughout the Greater Toronto Area, providing community services such as child care and recreational facilities is taking a new path. The YMCA is partnering with private developers to incorporate its services in mixed-use buildings that become vital community hubs.

Diamond Schmitt Architects has designed two such facilities now under construction: Waterworks in downtown Toronto and at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

In this CBC News story, Donald Schmitt, Principal, says, “these partnerships not only contribute to the capital costs, but it also embeds the project in communities. It’s a key opportunity.”

Diamond Schmitt designed the award-winning Central Toronto YMCA which opened in the 1980s and established a new role for the YMCA in communities.
