Toronto is home to a growing cluster of small businesses closing their doors in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic then reopening online.
Plentea, a tea shop, is one of the latest to make the transition after its business went on a slump. As a member of Digital Main Street created by the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Area, it learned about the ShopHERE program. The program is supported by Google and other partners to help businesses move online.
Google is committing $1 million to the effort and there is a goal of growing the program to 10,000 small businesses, Yahoo Finance reported. In a press release, Toronto Mayor John Tory said there are currently 1,000 businesses in the program.
In order to be eligible for the program, businesses must be independent and can't be connected to a chain. They must have 10 employees or less and must pay commercial property taxes in Toronto, Yahoo Finance reported.
