George Brown College issued the following announcement on Dec. 16.

Well 2019, it’s been a slice! It was a busy year, full of amazing achievements, innovation and exciting new partnerships to take us into the future.

Let’s take a look back at highlights of 2019 at George Brown College:

New home for the School of Design

In April our School of Design moved into fancy new digs at the Daniels Waterfront—City of the Arts complex (pictured) at Lower Jarvis and Queens Quay East. This facility is an expansion of our Waterfront Campus and features specialized lab spaces, bright classrooms, a digital media and gaming incubator, and a new home for the IN Store, which sells student and alumni-designed products.

Future focus—Strategy 2022, Vision 2030

In August we unveiled our roadmap for the future—a plan to ensure we prepare resilient and future-ready graduates and that we, as an organization, are ready to adapt and evolve as new challenges posed by climate change, technology and social change come our way.

Sidewalk Labs partnership

In November we announced a partnership with Google’s sister company Sidewalk Labs to explore ideas for urban innovation on Toronto’s eastern waterfront.

We have many cool ideas to consider: community kitchens, public workshops, digital literacy initiatives and more.

This partnership builds on our city-building efforts, which include our expansion of Waterfront Campus.

The Arbour continues to win awards

Our plan to expand our Waterfront Campus with a mass-timber building continues to impress. Construction on The Arbour is slated to start in 2021 and the design has already racked up several awards, including three in 2019.

And in May, the federal government pledged to invest $4.1 million in the project, as part of the Green Construction Through Wood program.

Noella Milne becomes Chancellor of George Brown College

Toronto lawyer and youth advocate Noella Milne began her three-year term as Chancellor of George Brown College on May 3.

We officially welcomed Noella to George Brown with a ceremony at Waterfront Campus. She’s the second person to hold the position, succeeding Sally Horsfall Eaton who served as chancellor from 2012 to 2018.

Student Success Hub launches at Waterfront Campus

We set up the Student Success Hub so students can spend more time online getting stuff done than in line waiting for service.

The hub opened in September. Students can access services in three zones: self-help, peer support and professional help. The idea is to support students so they can find info faster and access services easier.

Online student orientation

In November we rolled out our first ever online orientation for new students. It’s a series of modules that give students an overview of what to expect at George Brown and help them navigate the ins-and-outs of getting started.

Right now, this tool is available to new students starting in January 2020.

Men's Indoor Soccer OCAA champions 2019_300x200

Huskies win badminton and indoor soccer championships

2019 was another great one for our varsity athletes, especially for our badminton and indoor soccer teams.

Anh Hoang won the women’s badminton OCAA (Ontario Collegiate Athletics Association) championship for the second-straight year. She went on to win silver at the national championships.

The badminton mixed doubles team of Angeline Alviar and Mike Ra also captured the OCAA title. The pair also won silver at the nationals.

Our men’s indoor soccer team won the OCAA (Ontario Collegiate Athletics Association) championship by beating the Fanshawe Falcons 1-0 on March 22, 2019 (pictured).

LIFT Lab opens at the Fashion Exchange

Students and faculty at our Fashion Exchange do amazing things, working with local designers and companies to bring socially conscious and sustainable ideas to life. In October we kicked things up a notch with the opening of the Leading Innovation in Fashion Technology lab, or LIFT.

This new space is outfitted with the latest tech, including an Epson dye sublimation printer for custom textile printing, a laser cutter, a machine that embroiders circuits used for wearable tech and a 3D digital fitting booth. Neat, huh?
