Ontario Power Generation issued the following announcement on June 21.
Pickering powers the economy while saving customers money
Pickering – Today, Ontario Premier-designate Doug Ford visited the Pickering Nuclear
Generating Station to re-affirm support for continued operations until 2024, including saving
electricity customers money and preserving jobs. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) President
and CEO Jeff Lyash and employees were pleased with the announcement.
“OPG’s publically owned nuclear plants, including Pickering, are the low-cost, reliable and clean
power producers of this province,” said Jeff Lyash, OPG’s President and CEO. “By keeping this
public asset open we will save Ontario’s electricity customers $600 million in costs that would
have to be added to everyone’s monthly bills while avoiding carbon emissions equal to that of
3.4 million cars.”
Operating Pickering to 2024 will;
• Save electricity customers up to $600 million,
• Preserve 7,500 jobs across Ontario,
• Contribute $12.3 billion to Ontario’s GDP, and
• Avoid carbon emissions comparable to 3.4 million cars each year.
OPG has applied to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to renew Pickering’s
operating licence and keep it operational to 2024. CNSC staff have recommended the
application be approved. As part of the application process, public hearings will be held between
June 25 and 29 in Pickering.
Quick facts:
• Continuing operating Pickering Nuclear is safe, and will secure a reliable and efficient
supply of low cost, baseload electricity.
• For two years in a row, Pickering has been awarded the highest possible safety rating
from federal regulators.
• OPG has continually invested in the station to keep the units running efficiently.
OPG is Ontario’s publically owned low-cost electricity producer that generates safe, clean, and
reliable power for Ontario. More than 99 per cent of this power is free of smog and carbon
emissions. OPG’s electricity is priced 40 per cent lower than other generators, which helps
moderate customer bills.
