City of Toronto issued the following announcement on May 31.

Bicycle lanes will receive additional maintenance in the coming weeks to ensure that they are ready for thousands of people on bikes expected to hit the streets throughout the warmer months.

"In 2016, Council endorsed the Ten Year Cycling Network Plan to help ease congestion on Toronto's streets and transit, create a cleaner environment, and promote healthy and active transportation choices, and we are implementing that plan," said Mayor John Tory. "I am dedicated to getting Toronto moving and ensuring cyclists can get around our city safely."

"To support active modes of transportation, we must maintain a connected cycling network and ensure that cyclists have a safe and reliable route to travel on," said Councillor Jaye Robinson (Ward 25 Don Valley West), Chair of the City's Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. "An important component of providing safe cycling facilities is providing bicycle lanes that are kept clean of debris through street sweeping and regular maintenance."

The heightened maintenance includes additional sweeping of bike lanes, a focus on filling potholes in bike lanes, and adjusting catch basins in and around bike lanes to ensure a smoother roadway surface.

In addition, the City's Transportation Services staff has been repainting bicycle lanes to help make road markings more visible. This work will continue throughout the month.

So far this year, Transportation Services has repainted bicycle lanes and made improvements at:

• Annette Street at Jane Street

• College Street at Palmerston Avenue

• Crescent Town Road, Dawes Road and Victoria Park Avenue

• Lansdowne Avenue, between Lappin Avenue and Dupont Street

• Martin Grove Road, between Eglinton Avenue West and Rathburn Road

• McNicoll Avenue – Finch Trail, between Kennedy Road and Silver Star Boulevard

• Runnymede Road at St. Clair Avenue West

• Runnymede Road at Bloor Street West

• Runnymede Road at Dundas Street West

In June, the following locations are scheduled for repainting and improvements:

• Dundas Street East at Jones Avenue and various other locations between Broadview and Greenwood Avenues

• Gerrard Street, between Bay and Elizabeth Streets

• Peter Street, between King Street West and Queen Street West

• Poplar Plains Road, between Edmund Avenue and St. Clair Avenue West

• Strachan Avenue, between Queen Street West and Lake Shore Boulevard West

• Shuter Street between Jarvis and River Streets

• Shuter Street at Church Street

New road markings:

• Renforth Avenue, between Gentian Drive to Eglinton Avenue West

• Stilecroft Drive, between Sentinel Road and Trail Head

• Dewson Street, between Ossington Avenue to Roxton Road
