Seneca College issued the following announcement on April 24.
The Seneca community is deeply saddened by the horrific attack on Yonge Street yesterday.
It is with great sadness that I inform the Seneca community of the death of one of our students yesterday as a result of the horrific attack on Yonge Street. She was, along with nine others, an innocent victim of this tragic act of violence. Two other Seneca students received minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
On behalf of all of us, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends. Our condolences as well go to the families and friends of all those who lost their lives yesterday. I also want to pay special tribute to the police, fire, EMS and hospital personnel who responded with such courage and compassion to this unprecedented assault on our city.
Along with the rest of the city, and world, we were stunned by yesterday’s news. The reports associating the driver with Seneca are extremely troubling. Yet it is vital that we do not let this terrible act undermine our determination to be the peaceful, tolerant and inclusive society that is admired around the globe. We must grieve, and we must heal, but we must also resolve to carry on.
Seneca is a large community. We have tens of thousands of students and employees. Along with our graduates, numbering now in the hundreds of thousands, we are the size of a city. Sadly, bad things happen in big communities. But many, many more good and great things happen in them too. Tonight we will celebrate our students who have received scholarships and bursaries. In a short few weeks we will honour our graduates at convocation. Those are the soaring moments that make everything we do here at Seneca worthwhile.
However you were affected by yesterday’s attack, please know that Seneca is here to support you. Yesterday’s events only reinforce the power of community, of mutual support, of helping each other through tough times. Counselling is available for both students and employees who need it.
I want to give special thanks to the Seneca staff who responded yesterday to support our students involved in the attack. As always, our employees rose magnificently to the challenge even in the worst of circumstances. You make me proud every day.
