City of Toronto issued the following announcement on April 11.
Mayor John Tory has officially proclaimed tomorrow as Jersey Day in the City of Toronto to honour the players and families affected by last week's tragic bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He is encouraging Torontonians to take part in Jersey Day to demonstrate their support for those that have been affected.
"We are all heartbroken by this tragedy. This is a small but important way for everyone, including City of Toronto staff, to demonstrate their support for all those who have been affected," said Mayor Tory. "It is so far geographically between Toronto and Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and yet we are part of the same country that celebrates hockey, that celebrates its young people, and that celebrates its small towns and big cities.
"I hope we will encourage lots of people to take part in Jersey Day as a way of sending yet another signal to Humboldt to say we are with you."
Interim City Manager Giuliana Carbone has encouraged City of Toronto staff to participate in Jersey Day by wearing a hockey jersey to work on Thursday. Those who don't have a hockey jersey are encouraged to wear green and gold – the colours of the Humboldt Broncos. City staff whose role requires them to wear a uniform, personal protective equipment and/or be visible for public safety or emergency reasons have been asked to check with their supervisor and participate only if doing so will not interfere with their safety or that of the public.
