Flashfibr, a fibre optic internet, TV, phone and IT products company, will be launching a $400 million infrastructure update of services in the Durham region to provide internet services beginning this summer.
Flashfibr's plans for the region include faster and more secure internet for residences and businesses, according to the company. The company also hopes to attract new data and information employers to the region.
Flashfibr CEO Howard Morton said the company’s launching of services to this area, where light speed fibre-based internet is remotely available in homes and businesses, will help meet high demand.
“Demand is growing; data is increasing at a pace of 50 percent year over year, creating oceans of information,” Morton said. “Yet Durham’s aging infrastructure limits residents and businesses to a trickle of data. Slow intermittent internet restricts customer experience and impacts economic development."
Brad Duguid, the Province of Ontario minister of economic development and growth, said Flashfibr services will keep Durham Region up to date in the fast-moving digital world.
“This is a truly exciting announcement, as the introduction of FLASHFIBR will help ensure Durham Region has the tools to remain competitive in our increasing digital world,” Duguid said. “Right now we are in the midst of an innovation revolution, where rapidly evolving technologies are transforming businesses."
Flashfibr said it hopes to improve the quality of life for residents and help fuel the growth of the economy.
